Nunuk – Tearin’ Down Walls

When Jenny from Nunuk called me for the first time it sounded like a bit of an emergency: the german-spanish band had just recorded a whole bunch of wonderful songs for their debut, but somehow the pieces of the puzzle just wouldn’t come together. The recordings had been done pretty quickly without a lot of prep work. Now the tracking sessions were over, but the songs were far from being a finished product. Everything sounded fine, but there was no common thread to form a cohesive record and few unique sounds that capture one’s attention. A friend of mine had recommended that Jenny should get in touch with me to find out what could be done about this misery.

Every Nunuk song is a versatile individualist. Hand-made world music grooves merge with electronic beats. Atmospheric synths support warm piano chords. After a couple of chats with Jenny and Julius it quickly became clear that this job would require more than just a quick mix. I definitely enjoy these kind of challenges and fortunately the four musicians had the confidence to entrust me with the project. So we took a step back and revisited the songs with a fresh mindset. I took the liberty to really put each song under a microscope and take it apart if it needed it. I added new synths, beats or percussion parts or simply too existing sounds to a whole new level. So there was a lot of work that went into it before even thinking about mixing the tracks here at the Satellite. Jenny and Julius later joined me here at the studio to polish the last details, which is often easier in person than via emails or phone. The album was then mastered by my dear colleague Alex Kloss who’s work was instrumental for making it all come together as a homogeneous record.

The album titled “Tearin’ Down Walls” was released on Hey!blau Records on March 3rd 2016 and is available on all major digital platforms. After we were done Nunuk went on to promote the album with a tour through German, Austria, and Switzerland.
